Editorial Note

"We built this knowledge hub because authors kept asking the same question: what does that actually mean? Every term below comes from real conversations with writers we've worked alongside since 2019."
— R. Whitmore, Editorial Director

The Page Focus Collective Book Services Knowledge Hub

Author Development

A sustained engagement where we work with a writer over multiple drafts — sometimes across multiple books — to strengthen voice, structure, and commercial viability. Not coaching. Not cheerleading. Structural, honest, manuscript-level work.
Used by 38 authors since our founding. Average engagement: 14 months.

Beta Reading

A controlled first-reader process where two to four trained readers assess your manuscript for pacing, clarity, and emotional resonance before it reaches a professional editor. We provide consolidated feedback, not scattered opinions.

Copy Editing

Line-level editing focused on grammar, consistency, punctuation, and readability. We follow the author's chosen style guide (Chicago, Hart's, house style) and flag every deviation. Tracked changes. No silent rewrites.
"The cleanest tracked-changes file I've ever received." — J. Hargreaves, novelist, Edinburgh

Developmental Editing

Deep structural editing that addresses plot architecture, character arc, thematic coherence, and narrative logic. For non-fiction: argument flow, evidence placement, chapter sequencing. Delivered as a detailed editorial letter plus annotated manuscript.

eBook Conversion

Transforming a finalised manuscript into reflowable EPUB3 and fixed-layout Kindle formats. Includes metadata embedding, table of contents generation, image optimisation, and device testing across six reader platforms.

ISBN & Distribution Setup

Registering your ISBN, configuring metadata for Bowker/Nielsen, and setting up distribution channels through IngramSpark, KDP, or direct-to-retailer pipelines. We handle the paperwork; you retain all rights.

Layout & Typesetting

Interior design for print and digital: font selection, leading, margin ratios, chapter openers, running heads, orphan/widow control. We use InDesign exclusively. Every layout is proofed against the physical trim size.
Over 120 titles typeset. Trim sizes from A-format paperback to 280mm art books.

Manuscript Assessment

A one-time diagnostic report on a complete or near-complete manuscript. Covers structure, voice, market positioning, and a candid recommendation on next steps. Typically 3,000–5,000 words. Not a line edit.

Proofreading

The final quality pass after typesetting. We check for typographical errors, layout inconsistencies, pagination issues, and any residual grammatical slips. Performed on PDF proofs using BSI proofreading marks or digital annotation.

Typographic Cover Design

Cover design built around type rather than stock photography. We create bespoke lettering compositions, select complementary typefaces, and deliver print-ready files for front, spine, and back cover with barcode placement.
"My cover stopped people in Waterstones. That never happened with my first two books." — A. Lennox, Glasgow

Not Sure Where to Start?

How We Work

Every engagement begins with a sample edit — typically 1,500 words of your manuscript edited by the person who will handle the full project. No bait-and-switch. No junior editors working under a senior name. You see the quality before you commit.

We cap our active projects at fifteen manuscripts per quarter. This is deliberate. It means we decline work regularly, but it also means every author gets direct access to their editor, responses within one working day, and no missed deadlines.

Deadline adherence since 2019: every project delivered on or before the agreed date.
